A personal story about wasting money on jewellery that stopped feeling like me, until I discovered the bracelet that's been growing with me for two years, one charm at a time.
Last Tuesday, I emptied the jewellery dish on my dresser onto my bed and actually counted.
Four gold chains. Three slightly different lengths, all of which I stopped wearing within a year of buying. Two silver bracelets that went green where they touched my skin. A tangled mess of earrings, most of them missing their pair. A Pandora bracelet from 2019 that I haven't clasped on since my ex moved out. A locket my mum gave me that I've worn exactly twice because the chain keeps catching on jumpers.

The bracelet grew with me. It didn't get replaced when my life changed, it just added a new word to the sentence.
Parting Thoughts
I'm in year two now. Fourteen charms, same bracelet. I wear it in the shower (stainless steel, doesn't tarnish, I checked). I wear it to the gym. I wear it to meetings. I don't take it off because there's no reason to.
Last week, I added a fifteenth charm, a little house, for the keys I just got.
Here's the thing I keep coming back to. When I was 14, the charm bracelet from my mum cost her about £30 and lasted 17 years in a drawer, still recognizable, still meaningful, still the only piece in the dish I could point to and say "that's me."
I don't know what a charm bracelet "should" feel like. I just know that every time I look at my wrist now, I see the last two years of my life. And I haven't added anything to the dead-jewellery drawer since I got this one.
