I Used to Buy a New Bracelet Every Time My Life Changed...

Until I Found Something That Actually Kept Up With Me

A personal story about wasting money on jewellery that stopped feeling like me, until I discovered the bracelet that's been growing with me for two years, one charm at a time.

Last Tuesday, I emptied the jewellery dish on my dresser onto my bed and actually counted.

Four gold chains. Three slightly different lengths, all of which I stopped wearing within a year of buying. Two silver bracelets that went green where they touched my skin. A tangled mess of earrings, most of them missing their pair. A Pandora bracelet from 2019 that I haven't clasped on since my ex moved out. A locket my mum gave me that I've worn exactly twice because the chain keeps catching on jumpers.

And then, right at the bottom, a little silver charm bracelet from when I was fourteen.

While I'd seen custom jewelry brands everywhere, I didn't really think personalized bracelets were for me. Now, I wish I had discovered these pieces sooner. They're beautiful and lucky us! They aren't just designed for special occasions.

It was the only piece of jewellery in the whole dish that I still recognised as mine.

Everything else — every single chain, every locket, every earring — I'd bought because I was who I was at the time. The gold chain was for when I got the promotion in 2020. The locket was for when mum went in for surgery. The Pandora was from when I thought I'd be with my ex forever. Every purchase was a snapshot. Every piece was frozen in the moment I bought it, and I wasn't that person anymore, so the jewellery didn't feel like me anymore, so it went in the dish.

I'm 31. I have a drawer of jewellery that tells me the story of every version of myself I've stopped being. And the only piece that still makes sense is the one I got when I was fourteen.

Needless to say, personalized jewelry has transformed how I express myself. Now, instead of buying a new bracelet for every milestone, I simply add a charm that represents that moment.

The Turning Point

So I went down a rabbit hole.

I started looking at charm bracelets again, like, properly. I looked at Pandora first, obviously. And the thing that stopped me was the price per charm. £40 for a small enamel heart. £80 for anything with a stone. If I wanted a ten-charm bracelet I was looking at £500–800, and I'd already spent that much on jewellery in my twenties that I never wore.

Then I found an official Italian charm bracelets brand.

Here's the thing I didn't know. The Italian 9mm charm bracelet is the original format. It's been around since the 1990s, it's what every brand in the original Italian jewellery tradition uses, and the charms from one brand fit bracelets from any other brand. They click open like little lego pieces. No clasp, no jeweller, no commitment. And the charms start at less than £2 each.

I'll be honest, the first brand I found looked a bit sketchy. Reviews said it shipped from China and took 3–4 weeks. Tracking kept stopping. I nearly gave up on the whole idea.

Then I found Charms Official®.

They ship directly from their boutique in Italy. I ordered on a Tuesday night at 11pm and the parcel moved from the Italy into the UK DHL system by Wednesday morning. Friday afternoon, it was on my desk.

The Bling Bundle came with a gold-tone watch, a starter bracelet, and a first charm, a pink plate "Bling Bling" charm that I didn't initially think I'd love but ended up keeping on as my signature. The whole thing was £80. Which is less than I've spent on individual necklaces I no longer wear.

And then the collection started.

The first charm I added was a tiny coffee cup. Because I have a morning routine, same cafe, same corner table, same flat white before work, and it felt silly to buy a charm for something so ordinary, until I thought about how most of my life IS the ordinary things, and those are the ones I want to remember.

The second was a paw print. My boyfriend and I adopted Rory from the shelter in March. Small wire terrier, ten years old, grumpy, absolute love of my life.

The third was a plane. I finally booked the Japan trip I'd been saving for since 2022, two weeks in Tokyo and Kyoto, and I added the plane charm the day the flights got booked, six months before I left. I wore it the whole way there.

By the end of my first year, I had eight charms. Every single one was a moment. A pet. A trip. A career move. A book I couldn't stop thinking about (yes, there's a tiny book charm). A sun because July is my favourite month.

The bracelet grew with me. It didn't get replaced when my life changed, it just added a new word to the sentence.

Parting Thoughts

I'm in year two now. Fourteen charms, same bracelet. I wear it in the shower (stainless steel, doesn't tarnish, I checked). I wear it to the gym. I wear it to meetings. I don't take it off because there's no reason to.

Last week, I added a fifteenth charm, a little house, for the keys I just got.

Here's the thing I keep coming back to. When I was 14, the charm bracelet from my mum cost her about £30 and lasted 17 years in a drawer, still recognizable, still meaningful, still the only piece in the dish I could point to and say "that's me."

I don't know what a charm bracelet "should" feel like. I just know that every time I look at my wrist now, I see the last two years of my life. And I haven't added anything to the dead-jewellery drawer since I got this one.

That might be the most honest recommendation I can give.

If you're curious, the Bling Bundle is on their site; it's what I started with. It's currently 35% off. I didn't write this for a discount; I wrote it because I've spent fifteen years buying jewelry that didn't stick, and this is the first thing that has.
